Erica & Tyler’s Penny SLO Wedding blended New York charm and San Diego soul — a Bumble match turned magical night under the stars.

Every once in a while, you meet a couple whose story feels perfectly of its time — and yet completely timeless. Erica and Tyler’s Penny SLO Wedding was just that: the union of two hearts who found each other on Bumble, built a life rooted in love and laughter, and celebrated it all in one of San Luis Obispo’s most charming downtown venues.

From a Bumble Match to “I Do”

Erica, a sharp and stylish New Yorker, and Tyler, a laid-back San Diegan, matched on Bumble — a true modern love story. What started as a simple swipe turned into something lasting, something worth celebrating with family and friends gathered in California’s Central Coast sunshine.

Their relationship embodies the best of both worlds: her East Coast poise meets his West Coast ease. Together, they’ve built a partnership grounded in balance — spontaneous and steady, fun and intentional, city-slick and sun-soaked.

So when it came time to plan their wedding, San Luis Obispo made perfect sense. It’s a place that carries the charm of a small town but the creativity and soul of a city. And nestled right in the heart of downtown, they found the venue that felt just right: The Penny SLO Wedding.

The Perfect Backdrop: The Penny SLO

If you’ve ever stepped inside The Penny SLO, you know it’s something special. With its exposed brick, vaulted ceilings, and soft string lighting, it’s the kind of space that feels both industrial and intimate — an urban retreat tucked into the heart of downtown.

Originally built in the 1930s as a blacksmith shop, The Penny has been lovingly restored and reimagined as a modern event space that honors its roots while offering all the amenities couples love. It’s no wonder it’s become one of San Luis Obispo’s most sought-after venues for couples looking to host a Penny SLO Wedding that’s effortlessly cool and endlessly personal.

For Erica and Tyler, The Penny offered everything they wanted:

  • A downtown location where guests could explore SLO before and after the celebration.
  • A mix of indoor and outdoor spaces, from the open-air courtyard to the cozy, brick-lined interior.
  • Timeless design, allowing their style and story to shine without needing to overdecorate.

Planning With Intention

From the beginning, Erica and Tyler’s approach to wedding planning was thoughtful and centered around one thing — being present.

They wanted to enjoy cocktail hour, laugh with family, and actually experience their wedding day rather than rushing from one photo to the next. That’s why they chose to do a first look and most of their portraits before the ceremony, giving them more time later to celebrate freely.

As Erica wrote in one of her emails:

“We’d like to do a first look and as many of the formal photos as possible before the ceremony … we can squeeze in the larger family portraits at the start of cocktail hour, but we’d like to enjoy as much of that time as possible ourselves.”

Their planning paid off — the day flowed seamlessly, filled with ease, laughter, and all the little in-between moments that often become the most meaningful.

The Day They Said “I Do”

The day began with soft morning light, calm excitement, and an unmistakable sense of joy. Erica’s bridal look was classic yet modern — a nod to her New York roots — while Tyler’s relaxed confidence reflected his coastal upbringing.

They shared their first look against The Penny’s signature brick backdrop, just the two of them taking a quiet breath before the day unfolded. Their ceremony at the nearby Mission Gardens was heartfelt and full of warmth, surrounded by loved ones from near and far.

When they returned to The Penny, the celebration truly came alive. Guests mingled in the courtyard during cocktail hour, champagne glasses clinking as golden light faded into twilight. Inside, long tables glowed with candlelight, laughter echoed against the brick walls, and the music set the tone for an unforgettable evening.

And as the night went on, Erica and Tyler danced under the stars at The Penny SLO, surrounded by friends, family, and the kind of love that only grows stronger with time.
